Bridging Hearts and Worlds: Prison pen pals connecting nationwide

“Even Celebrities Go to Prison”

Back in April of this year, I was honored to have a special guest stop by my cell. Justin Bieber decided to visit the California State Prison in Lancaster (los Angeles County). Having been “Born Again” recently, he wanted to share his newly found spiritual side with the Christian population here. Justin brought his pastor, Judah Smith from Hillsong. His wife (Hailey) also accompanied him.

The “Paws for Life” program has 35 dogs housed in my building on “A” yard. Their barking is music to my ears. We train, love and care for our dogs. Saving them from being euthanized and adopted into a ‘forever home” is our goal.

I had special permission to have my door open (with a dog gate) because I had “Tilly” in my cell. Tilly was nearly blind and bumps into all kinds of objects. Poor girl! Just sang four songs. I had Tilly on my lap and was bouncing her to his music. Justin and Hailey saw us. After his “mini-concert”, they headed straight to my cell. We talked for a few minutes with our masks on. Both seemed friendly and down to Earth.

Other celebrities that have visited us include: Emily Deschenel (bones), Sophia Bush (Chicago P.D.), Natalie Potman (Star Wars), Common, John Legend, Kim and Kanye West, as well as various sports figures. All are animal lovers!

My name is Larry and I’d like to share a few things about me. I graduated from the California Culinary Academy as a baker.pastry chef in downtown San Francisco. Baking sourdough bread and designing wedding cakes was my specialty. I had the opportunity to visit nearly all foreign countries.

The “Paws for Life” dog program has changed my life and touched my heart. Yes, Tilly was adopted into a loving home. I’ve personally saved dozens of dogs. I really got attached to a few. I’d love to hear about your dog or animals. I look forward to your letter.
